When people are looking for a hypoallergenic, non-shedding dog, one of the first breeds that pops into many peoples minds is the poodle. Pooles come in a few different sizes, but all of them are non-shedding, non-allergenic dogs that make a great addition to any family. Poodles can be found in the Toy, Mini or Standard sizes. Their origins can be traced back to Germany but France made the breed popular.
Whatever the country it came from it is at home in any family today.
The poodle was originally bred as a water dog and is close in relation to the Portugese Water Dog and the Irish Water Spaniel. In fact it’s name originates from the German term “Puddeln” which means “to splash in water”. It was used as a retriever for game fowl and as a retriever has kept it’s intelligence from the field and it’s heartiness and versatility to this day. The Poodles dense, curly coat is good for shedding water…but not hair! It does still need to be groomed though.
Poodle grooming is somewhat of an art if you want it to be. I have seen them that look like they belong on the cover of Vanity Fair, or trimmed like a lion in the African wilderness. Whatever your choice they still need to be brushed on a regular basis and trimmed a few times a year. Special attention should be paid to their ears, to make sure they stay free of infection causing debris.

Standard Size Poodle Information-
Standard poodles will typically live 10-13 years and grow to be between 45 and 65 pounds. Their frame is large, but they are a thinner dog so they don’t have the heft of other larger breeds.
The breed standard is between 22 and 26 inches tall at the shoulder, however they can be as short as 15 inches.
Miniature Poodle Information-
The breed standard is between 22 and 26 inches tall at the shoulder, however they can be as short as 15 inches.
Miniature Poodle Information-
Mini Poodles also have a 10-13 year lifespan and were derived from the Standard Poodle. Mini poodles are the next size down from the Standard and are less than 15 inches tall at the shoulders. They are typically 12-18 pounds so are a little easier to keep. They do still have a lot of energy though, so exercise is important.
Toy Poodle Information-
Toy Poodle Information-
The toy poodle is the smallest an longest living of the poodle sizes. Weighing in at only 4-8 pounds this is the perfect high rise or in city dog. It doesn’t take much for a dog this tiny to get enough excercise, but you still get the benefits of a great companion and his little bark is still good to warn if intruders are around. The toy poodle will live 12-14 years…and it is a little easier to keep it groomed due to its small size.
Whichever poodle you like you will find that it has a lot of heart and personality. Several colors are available to choose from and people all over the world swear the Poodle is the best dog ever bred.
